Scripture Memory For the Rest of 2023

Last week, I posted about the importance of Scripture memory. You can find that blog post here. Today, I’m sharing the Scriptures that I want to commit to memory by the end of this year.

I was so encouraged by how many of you said you would join me in memorizing Psalm 27! It’s always so exciting to know that you’re not doing something alone. (For Psalm 27, I’m currently working on verse 9, but progress is a bit slow, as I’m also working on another passage as well).

However, one thing I want to point out is that it’s important to not idolize the Scriptures over God.

Jesus said it best in John 5:39-40: “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.”

I have no doubt that the word of God is inspired, and profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness (1 Timothy 3:16). It’s also sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12), and Jesus Himself is the Word (John 1:1-5).

What I’m saying is that the Bible tells us about God so that we can get to know Him personally— it helps us stay on track and learn about Him.

But let’s remember that it’s not “God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Scriptures”— the Holy Spirit lives inside of us, teaches, helps, guides, corrects, and comforts us (John 14:26, 14:15-17, 16:12-15, and Acts 9:31).

So, although the Word of God is full of power and important to be full of, let’s not forget that we worship and have a relationship with God, and not His words!

Here are the verses/passages that I want to have memorized by 2024:

Psalm 27

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the defense of my life;
Whom shall I dread?

When evildoers came upon me to devour my flesh,
My adversaries and my enemies, they stumbled and fell.

Though a host encamp against me,
My heart will not fear;
Though war arise against me,
In spite of this I shall be confident.

One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord
And to meditate in His temple.

For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle;
In the secret place of His tent He will hide me;
He will lift me up on a rock.

And now my head will be lifted up above my enemies around me,
And I will offer in His tent sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.

Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice,
And be gracious to me and answer me.

When You said, “Seek My face,” my heart said to You,
“Your face, O Lord, I shall seek.”

Do not hide Your face from me,
Do not turn Your servant away in anger;
You have been my help;
Do not abandon me nor forsake me,
O God of my salvation!

For my father and my mother have forsaken me,
But the Lord will take me up.

Teach me Your way, O Lord,
And lead me in a level path
Because of my foes.

Do not deliver me over to the desire of my adversaries,
For false witnesses have risen against me,
And such as breathe out violence.

I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.

Wait for the Lord;
Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the Lord.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Psalm 91

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
My God, in whom I trust!”

For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper
And from the deadly pestilence.

He will cover you with His pinions,
And under His wings you may seek refuge;
His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.

You will not be afraid of the terror by night,
Or of the arrow that flies by day;

Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
Or of the destruction that lays waste at noon.

A thousand may fall at your side
And ten thousand at your right hand,
But it shall not approach you.

You will only look on with your eyes
And see the recompense of the wicked.

For you have made the Lord, my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place.

No evil will befall you,
Nor will any plague come near your tent.

For He will give His angels charge concerning you,
To guard you in all your ways.

They will bear you up in their hands,
That you do not strike your foot against a stone.

You will tread upon the lion and cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you will trample down.

“Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.

“He will call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.

“With a long life I will satisfy him
And let him see My salvation.”

2 Chronicles 14:11

Then Asa called to the Lord his God and said, “Lord, there is no one besides You to help in the battle between the powerful and those who have no strength; so help us, O Lord our God, for we trust in You, and in Your name have come against this multitude. O Lord, You are our God; let not man prevail against You.”

While this is definitely a lot to try to learn in a little over a month, I already have a pretty good start on Psalm 27. I know some of Psalm 91 as well, although I’ve heard it in multiple translations so sometimes I get mixed up with wording, haha! I’ve also been working on 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

I’d love to know, will you pick one of these verses/passages to try to memorize? Do you have another one that you’re working on? I love hearing from y’all in the comments!
