The Lord Is Your Inheritance

A couple weeks ago, I was listening to a song after I came home from church. This particular song was in Hebrew (I have a deep fascination for languages), but the English lyrics were on the screen as well.

The main line in the chorus said, “You are my portion.”

As I was listening to the words and reading the translation, I instantly thought of Deuteronomy 10:9. This is what it says: “Therefore, Levi does not have a portion or inheritance with his brothers; the LORD is his inheritance, just as the LORD your God spoke to him.”

You see, out of all of the other 11 tribes and 2 half–tribes, the Levites were the only ones who didn’t get an allotment of the land that belonged to the sons of Israel.

And out of all the other tribes, one thing set apart the Levites: they were the only priests. No person was allowed to enter the priestly service unless they were a Levite.

And the priests were the only ones who had access to God.

That was so incredibly insignificant for their time, so let me paint a picture for you as to what this actually means.

Imagine if there was no Bible. Imagine if we as Christians had no Holy Spirit. Imagine if there were no Christians at all! Imagine a world where there was no hope of a Messiah one day coming to save us. And worst of all, imagine what life would be like if we couldn’t access God through prayer or any other means. Imagine if every time we sinned, we had to go through a priest to offer burnt offerings to God.

That doesn’t sound like a nice existence. At all. God must’ve seemed so far away to the Israelites. So to be a priest– and actually be able to access God and represent Him to His people– was something incredibly significant.

Because of the amazing position the Levites were in, God told them something significant: they didn’t get a piece of land as their inheritance– God was their inheritance.

I was thinking about this, and realized that this concept applies to us in more ways than we might think.

To a world of unbelievers, it’s my job and yours to Show The Word Who You Represent! (2 Corinthians 5:20). We have access to God when others don’t (Ephesians 2:18). As Christians, we don’t have to fear the punishment of God when we sin, we are instead reconciled to Him when we repent. (1 John 1:9, 1 John 4:17-18).

And you know what else? God Himself lives inside of us 24/7 (1 Corinthians 6:19, Hebrews 13:5-6).

All of this shows me one thing so clearly: as God’s chosen people, we are set apart (1 Peter 2:9, John 15:19).

Because we have the Lord for our inheritance, why would we need anything else? We have something unique, different, and so special: God is literally inside of us– constantly.

Lately this has encouraged me so much. I realized that I don’t need many of the things in this world that other people value as important. I have God for my possession, my inheritance. There’s nothing else I could ever want or need but Him. Because He is only always good.

I want to motivate you this week to really think about the fact that you have been chosen by God for a special purpose. You are so valued that He even lives inside of you constantly.

He is your inheritance– and living a life where we choose Him over the world is so worth it.
